Ocean Basket: Review

I love me some seafood! Shrimp, crab, oysters, mussels, squid…you name it. If it comes from the ocean it will probably be my first pick on the menu. Although there are numerous restaurants that serve seafood in Nairobi, many of them are sit-down restaurants suited for dinner or a long lunch.

Ocean Basket, a South African franchise, has however managed to comfortably straddle the line between the casual and formal dining experience. You can pop in for brunch and cocktails or show up later in the evening dressed up for a night out without feeling under-dressed or like you are doing too much. It’s also the kind of place where you can show up with your kids without getting scowls shot your way by your fellow dinners. No shopping trip is complete for me without stopping by their branch at ‘the hub mall’ in Karen to sample the Chef’s special. It has become my guilty pleasure.


Most importantly of all, the food is amazing! It had never crossed my mind to try butternut squash with my calamari before but once I tried it, it has quickly become my staple side dish whenever I order the platter. Portions are big and satisfying and the cocktails are the perfect accompaniment to a gossip session with the girls. The one thing I think they could improve on is their strawberry lemonade; it is always a bit too tart for my liking and all the extra syrup in the world doesn’t improve matters.
